High humidity is not only uncomfortable, but it creates a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Healthcare facilities have high air quality standards, which require them to take large amounts of air from outdoors through a ventilation system. Unfortunately, much of this air contains moisture and accounts for about 90% of the humidity in hospitals. That humidity creates an unsafe environment where bacteria can spread and mold can grow. This means that viruses in the hospital could be airborne, or that patients and staff might be breathing in fungi.

Relative humidity can impact the shelf life and product integrity of sterile supplies. Some products, such as biological indicators and chemical indicators used for sterilization monitoring and EKG electrodes used for patient monitoring, are very sensitive to humidity.

While high Humidity present in surrounds is affecting the operation of some electro-medical equipment used. This equipment may malfunction unexpectedly. Higher humidity levels may also impact calibration. Larger electrostatic discharge (ESD) pulses may create a risk of destruction of parts, premature failure, and erratic behavior of software that is "confusion" from ESD pulses.
